Military Engineers tasks can be broadly divided into three categories:
- Combat Engineering
- Strategic Support and
- Ancillary Support
Combat Engineering: Combat Engineering is the engineering which is done on the battlefield. Combat Engineers are responsible for the mobility on the front lines. They do all those tasks on the behalf of the forces which requires technical knowledge such as digging trenches and building temporary facilities such as bridges on the water bodies, bunkers etc in war zones.
Strategic Support: Military Engineers take care of the communication system of the forces. They are responsible for the construction and upgradation of airfield, port, roads, railways etc.
Ancillary Support: Ancillary support includes the deposal of unexploded warheads, provision and distributions of maps etc.
However, today the military engineering has been shrunk to the tasks of war logistics and preparedness.

In earlier times individuals who would do engineering courses such as mechanical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering etc used to provide Military Engineering Services. However, during the World-War-I the need of specialists was felt to be required. And subsequently, the branch of Military Engineering developed. Eligibility Criteria for Military Engineering
Eligibility criteria for Military Engineering are as follows:
- Candidates must have passed 12th class with Physics and Mathematics as necessary subjects.
- For admission, candidates are required to pass entrance exams such as JEE Main, JEE Advanced etc.
- Those who want to become a Military Engineer must have a Bachelor’s Degree in relevant engineering field.
- Candidates must enhance their skills by taking appropriate training and internships. Candidates have to apply for the Professional Engineering (PE) exam after the completion of the bachelor degree.
